Brazilian authorities have arrested two individuals linked to a foiled bombing attempt at Lady Gaga’s massive concert on Saturday night in Rio de Janeiro.
The suspects, according to the police, are associated with a group that encourages hate speech and the radicalisation of young people. Investigators revealed that the planned attack targeted LGBTQ+ concertgoers at the event, which drew over two million fans to Copacabana Beach.
“They were clearly saying that they were planning an attack at Lady Gaga’s concert motivated by sexual orientation,” said Felipe Cury, Rio’s police secretary, during a press conference on Sunday.

To prevent widespread alarm and misinformation, law enforcement chose not to disclose the threat before the concert. Security was tightened at the venue, with 5,200 police and military personnel deployed to safeguard attendees as Gaga performed her popular hits, including “Born This Way,” a song embraced as a symbol of pride by the LGBTQ+ community since its release in 2011.
Lady Gaga’s team responded after the incident came to light through media reports. In a statement, a spokesperson said there were no indications of danger at the time of the event.
“Prior to and during the show, there were no known safety concerns, nor any communication from the police or authorities to Lady Gaga regarding any potential risks,” the representative stated.
They added that organizers had worked in close coordination with law enforcement in the lead-up to the show. “The team worked closely with law enforcement throughout the planning and execution of the concert, and all parties were confident in the safety measures in place.”
The investigation into the attempted attack is ongoing.
