  • The FCT Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of Grace Godwin, a 23-year-old woman suspected to have been killed by one-chance criminals in the Jabi area of Abuja.
  • Godwin, a fuel attendant in Mabushi, reportedly boarded a commercial vehicle Friday night; her body was found the next morning near Iya Abubakar Street after her alleged abductors demanded ransom from her family.
  • Police operatives recovered her remains and took her to the National Hospital, where she was confirmed dead; her family has identified the body, and an autopsy is expected.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched an investigation into the mysterious death of a 23-year-old woman, Grace Godwin, whose body was discovered by the roadside in the Jabi area of Abuja. Authorities suspect she may have fallen victim to a notorious one-chance syndicate operating in the city.

Confirming the incident during a phone conversation on Sunday, the command’s Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said, “The police were informed about the incident and we went there to recover the body. Investigation is ongoing.”

Details of the incident were also shared by security analyst Zagzola Makama via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday. According to Makama, Godwin’s lifeless body was found early Saturday morning after she reportedly boarded a commercial bus the previous evening.

“A 23-year-old woman, identified as Grace Godwin, was found dead on Saturday morning in the Jabi area of Abuja, in what police suspect to be a case of abduction and possible murder,” Makama posted.

He further revealed that Godwin, who worked as a fuel attendant at the Mobil Filling Station in Mabushi, boarded a commercial vehicle at about 8:53 p.m. on Friday. The vehicle is believed to have been operated by a one-chance gang—criminals who pose as commercial drivers to rob unsuspecting passengers.

“Godwin, a fuel attendant at the Mobil Filling Station in Mabushi, was discovered unconscious by the roadside near Iya Abubakar Street around 6:00 a.m.,” Makama stated. “Preliminary investigations revealed that Grace boarded a commercial vehicle around 8:53 p.m. on Friday at Mabushi, a vehicle suspected to be operated by a one-chance criminal gang. The suspects reportedly contacted her family at 11:56 p.m. to demand ransom.”

According to Makama, police personnel from the Jabi Division quickly responded to a distress call and rushed the unconscious victim to the National Hospital, where doctors confirmed her dead on arrival.

“Detectives from the Jabi Police Division responded promptly and rushed the victim to the National Hospital, where she was confirmed dead by doctors on duty. Her body has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary for autopsy. Her family has been notified and has positively identified her,” he added.

The tragic case has sparked renewed concern about the activities of one-chance operators in Abuja, particularly their use of commercial vehicles to lure and abduct victims, often targeting commuters at night.

The FCT Police Command assured the public that efforts are being intensified to uncover the full circumstances surrounding Godwin’s death and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
