Police Command in Delta State said it will probe Mobile Telephone Network (MTN) for its involvement in cybercrime.

Esquire (ESQ) lawyer, F T Eruli-Ede accused MTN Managing Director (MD) Karl Toriola of colluding with several other MTN executives, including the company’s Human Resources Reward Unit, deleted emails containing critical information from one Mr Christopher Oyemike’s email box.

According to Eruli-Ede, the act was done without lawful authority.

Therefore, State Police Command stated that it will conduct a thorough investigation and prosecution of the telecommunication firm.

On Wednesday, staff of MTN appeared before the Police at the Delta State Police Headquarters in respect of the case.

The Police statement read:

The action of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc and its officers was done in flagrant violation of the extant provisions of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc) Act, 2015 especially sections 8, 9, 13, 14, and 16 (2) (a) & (b) and the Police had to come in for proper investigation.”

A police source (name withheld) said:

Yes! we have such a report before us and we are dealing with the case, officials of MTN came today, Wednesday, 27 July, 2023 and after taking statements from them, they were granted bail.

“We intend to charge the case to court as soon as we conclude our investigation, the law is there for everybody, including companies, so, we are doing our professional job as Police.”

A staff member of Eruli-Ede, Esq, confirmed on the phone that they have written a petition on behalf of Oyemike calling for a proper police investigation.
