Poll Results: PDP, Atiku Head to Tribunal

The Peoples Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, have headed to the Presidential Election Tribunal to petition the results produced during the February 25 poll.

Their mission was to challenge the declaration of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the presidential election.

The filing which was confirmed on Tuesday evening is marked CA/PEPC/05/2023 and has Atiku Abubakar and the PDP as petitioners.

According to the file, the Independent National Electoral Commission, Bola Tinubu, and the APC were the 1st to 3rd respondents in the petition.

Recall that the Labour Party and its candidate, Peter Obi filed a petition at the election petitions tribunal in Abuja, also challenging Tinubu’s status as the winner of the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

Obi’s petition marked: CA/PEPC/03/2023, has INEC; Tinubu; his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, and the APC as the 1st to 4th respondents.

The petitioners’ demanded for the tribunal to declare that Tinubu was not duly elected by a majority of the lawful votes cast at the election.

They sought for an order mandating INEC to retrieve the certificate of return issued to the APC candidate and issue a fresh one to Obi.

According to the INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu Tinubu polled 8,805,835 votes to emerge victorious in the election.

Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party who came second scored 6,984,640 votes, while Obi scored 6,101,533 votes.

The electoral umpire eventually declared Tinubu president-elect on March 1 on the grounds that his party scored majority of votes cast at the poll.
