Power Allocation Row: NISO Debunks ‘Zero Supply’ Claims, Blames Gas Shortage

2 Min Read
  • NISO denies zero power allocation to DisCos, says reports are false and misleading

  • Reduced electricity supply linked to gas constraints, not deliberate exclusion

  • MYTO framework ensures fair distribution despite nationwide generation shortfall

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has dismissed reports alleging that some electricity distribution companies (DisCos) received zero megawatts of power between March 20 and 22, 2026, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the operator clarified that no DisCo was completely cut off from supply at any time during the period, contrary to widespread reports suggesting total outages in parts of the country.

NISO explained that while electricity generation dropped within the timeframe, the situation was caused by persistent gas supply constraints rather than any deliberate denial of power allocation to specific distribution companies.

“Available generation was continuously dispatched and equitably allocated to all DisCos throughout the period,” the agency stated, stressing that the national grid remained operational despite reduced capacity.

The operator noted that Nigeria’s electricity challenges are largely rooted in gas supply instability, which continues to limit generation output and affect distribution nationwide. It added that the drop in supply experienced by consumers in some areas reflected overall generation shortages, not zero allocation at the DisCo level.

According to NISO, electricity distribution is guided by the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) framework regulated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, which ensures transparent and equitable sharing of available power across all DisCos.

The agency further clarified that near-total outages in certain locations may occur due to technical or local distribution issues, but such incidents should not be mistaken for a complete absence of supply allocation.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, NISO urged the public and media to verify information through official channels to avoid spreading misleading reports, as concerns grow over erratic electricity supply across the country.
