  • Impeached speaker Obasa returns as Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly.

  • Mojisola resigns, and gets re-elected as deputy speaker.

  • Obasa held the plenary session as Mojisola stepped down

After seven weeks of removal from office due to impeachment, Mudashiru Obasa returned as the speaker of the house.

Subsequently after taking the oath of office upon his re-election on Monday, 3rd March 2025, he presided over the plenary session.

Obasa’s re-election into office follows the resignation of Mojisola Meranda who stepped down after a series of deliberations at an inner caucus meeting.

Possible reasons for Mojisola’s resignation

Recall that Last month, precisely on the 18th of February, there was an invasion at the Lagos State House of Assembly plenary session by Department of State Security Service (DSS)men who claimed they went there on invitation.

This invasion interrupted the session held by Mojisola as she was captured on screen being so emotional due to the invasion and disruption caused by the DSS.

A source from BusinessDaynews disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was not happy with the impeachment of Obasa because the House didn’t carry him along in their decision. The source who pleaded anonymous further disclosed that the President wants Obasa back to the House as the Speaker hence, the division and unrest in the plenary session.

Obasa’a return, a play of power pass power?

While Obasa was impeached by 32 out of 40 House members due to alleged fraud, misappropriation and unruly attitude when he was out of the country in America, he maintained that it was unconstitutional and illegal.

Furthermore, Obasa also claimed that he was not impeached, reinstating that if the house wants to vote him out, it shouldn’t be in his absence but through a constitutional process.

According to him, “My status in the House? I believe strongly I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done. If you want to remove me, remove me the proper way and I will not contest it,”

Could Obasa be right after all?

Was he removed unconstitutionally? Are the allegations against Obasa unfounded?

However, being passed a vote of no confidence by over 70% of members of the House is a matter that calls for public attention. There is no smoke without fire.

Or could it be that the 32 House members conspired against the speaker and voted him out?

Recall that Obasa filed a suit against the 32 lawmakers at the Ikeja Division of the State High Court, over their decisions and no credible evidence has been brought against him.

In the same line, President Tinubu also called Obasa’s removal a “coup” while Mojisola stepped up at the Speaker.

Also, Punchonline reported that All Progressives Congress leaders, including former governors of Osun, Ogun, and Lagos states, Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, respectively, intervened on the Obasa vs Mojisola Speaker issue on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.

What could this mean?

Mojisola tendered her resignation after a ‘reconciliatory’ meeting with lawmakers on Monday. Perhaps, truly ‘power pass power’ and the powerful one has won.

Obasa is reinstated as the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly.

He was first elected into the Lagos State  House in 2007 as a member of the house representing Agege constituency. After eight years as a member, he emerged as a speaker in June 2015 when the former Speaker was impeached.

Obasa has been in power since then till his impeachment in February and his continuation in power as a speaker restarts today.

What a political elephant!

Obasa is a strong member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has been influential in Lagos politics.
