The Nigerian Presidency has introduced a new Airbus A330 as the latest addition to its fleet, replacing the outdated Boeing B737-700(BBJ) that has been in service for 19 years.

The unveiling was announced on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy.

The new Airbus A330 was showcased via Onanuga’s verified X handle, marking a significant upgrade from the Boeing B737-700(BBJ) acquired during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

Onanuga emphasized that the new jet was purchased below market value, offering substantial savings on maintenance and fuel costs, which previously amounted to millions of dollars annually.

Onanuga detailed that the decision to replace the old jet followed an investigative hearing by Nigeria’s parliament, which raised concerns about the aircraft’s safety and cost-effectiveness, especially after it malfunctioned on a trip to Saudi Arabia.

Consequently, the Nigerian Senate’s security and intelligence committee recommended acquiring a new aircraft to minimize downtime and operational costs.

“The new plane is spacious and equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, a customized interior, and an advanced communications system,” Onanuga noted. He did not disclose the acquisition cost of the Airbus A330.

President Tinubu departed Abuja for Paris, France, aboard the new jet at 04:08 pm on Monday, August 19, marking his fourth visit to the European country this year.
