President Bola Tinubu has declared that henceforth, April 7 will be known as National Police Day.
Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, announced the development on Monday during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony held at the Transcorp Hilton in Abuja.
In his address, he pointed out the critical importance of a complete overhaul of the institutional mindset and the memory of police officers.
The changes, he explained, were fundamental to his administration’s ongoing efforts to modernize, professionalize, and enhance accountability within the force.

He stressed the necessity of investing in training and capacity-building for both male and female officers, equipping them with the expertise needed to effectively carry out the demanding responsibilities of modern policing.
Also, the Federal Government has officially designated the first week of April as “Police Week,” with the last day of that week marked as National Police Day.
The President stated that his comprehensive reforms include substantial investments in training and capacity-building, all geared toward rejuvenating the police force and ensuring its effectiveness and professionalism.
He said:
“Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in our tradition of honouring the Police Force in the life of this great nation, we have approved the adoption of the first week of April as Police Week. Furthermore, the last day of the week, April 7, is hereby declared National Police Day in Nigeria.”
