- President Donald Trump imposed a fresh 10% tariff on Nigerian imports, citing Nigeria’s growing alignment with BRICS as a threat to U.S. interests.
- The tariff, announced on Truth Social, follows Nigeria’s confirmation as a BRICS partner during the 16th summit in October 2024, with President Tinubu backing the partnership.
- Experts warn the new tariff could hurt Nigeria’s non-oil exports, strain foreign reserves, and increase inflation, further complicating the country’s economic recovery.
U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a fresh 10% tariff on Nigerian imports, citing the country’s recent alignment with BRICS as a threat to American interests. The announcement was made via his Truth Social account.
Trump described BRICS as promoting “anti-American policies” and said Nigeria’s growing involvement with the bloc calls for economic consequences.

Nigeria officially became a BRICS partner during the 16th BRICS Summit held in October 2024. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has since reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the alliance.
The 10% tariff comes on top of a 14% reciprocal tariff the U.S. introduced in April 2025, which targeted Nigerian imports as part of broader efforts to reduce trade imbalances.
Although Nigeria’s crude oil exports — its major trade item with the U.S. — have so far remained largely unaffected, the new measure is expected to impact other sectors. Experts have raised several concerns:
• Nigerian goods may become less competitive in the U.S. due to higher costs.
• The tariff could derail Nigeria’s economic diversification efforts.
• Reduced export earnings might strain Nigeria’s foreign reserves and weaken the Naira.
• Broader trade disruptions could worsen inflation across several sectors.
In response, BRICS leaders at their recent summit condemned what they called “unjustified unilateral protectionist measures,” criticizing the rising use of tariffs without directly naming the U.S.
The move marks a new escalation in global trade tensions, especially between the U.S. and BRICS-aligned nations.
