Putin to Contest 6th Term as Russian President

Russian President, Vladimir Putin is set to announce his candidacy for another six-year term, paving the way for him to remain in power until 2030.

According to Kommersant, unidentified sources close to the presidential administration suggested that Putin may announce his participation in the March 2024 election.

However, the final decision rests with Putin, and there were other scenarios for what he might do at the conference.

Putin has been the leader of Russia since 1999, surpassing even Leonid Brezhnev’s 18-year tenure and becoming the longest-serving Russian ruler since Josef Stalin.

While many diplomats, spies, and officials have said they expected Putin to stay in power for life, there has yet to be any confirmation of his plans to run in the 2024 presidential vote 3.

In September 2023, Putin said he would make an announcement on his plans only after parliament called the presidential election – due by law to be done on December 3.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last month that if Putin decided to run, then no one would be able to compete with him.

Despite facing no competition for votes, checks revealed, Putin faced the most serious set of challenges any Kremlin chief has faced since Mikhail Gorbachev grappled with the crumbling Soviet Union nearly four decades ago.

Recall that the war in Ukraine has triggered the biggest confrontation with the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and the biggest external shock to the Russian economy in decades.

In June 2023, Putin faced a failed mutiny by Russia’s most powerful mercenary, Yevgeny Prigozhin. However, Prigozhin was killed in a plane crash two months later.
