A heavy rainstorm has damaged sections of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja, barely nine months after its commissioning, with debris from the facility spilling onto the Nyanya–Keffi Expressway and causing major traffic congestion.
The terminal was constructed under the supervision of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, as part of efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in the nation’s capital.

The downpour, which was accompanied by strong winds, reportedly ripped off parts of the terminal’s roofing, sending debris onto the busy expressway and making the road difficult for vehicles to pass.
The situation caused serious traffic gridlock along the Nyanya–Keffi corridor, leaving many commuters stranded.
Several passengers were forced to walk long distances to reach their destinations as vehicles struggled to move through the affected area.
Confirming the incident, Mr. Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, said the rainstorm also caused minor damage to the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and nearby buildings.
Olayinka added that no injuries were recorded and no vehicles were damaged, according to preliminary reports.
He further disclosed that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has directed security personnel to the scene to maintain order and help restore the free flow of traffic.
Authorities have also assured residents that immediate steps will be taken to repair the damaged parts of the terminal.
The Kugbo Bus Terminal, located along the Maraba–Nyanya route, is one of several transport projects developed by the FCT Administration to modernise urban transportation and reduce congestion in Abuja.
The project forms part of a N51 billion contract approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in May 2024 for the construction of three major bus terminals in the capital.
The terminals include Kugbo, Mabushi, and the Central Business District (CBD), with construction handled by Planet Projects Nigeria Limited.
Despite the huge investment, the Kugbo terminal has not yet started full commercial operations.
