A powerful rainstorm has caused extensive damage to multiple structures at the Federal Government Unity College in Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

The incident, which took place on Friday evening, followed a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds, Sunday PUNCH reported.

Among the facilities affected were the girls’ hostel fence, the Basic Science Laboratory, classrooms for Junior Secondary 1 and 2 as well as Senior Secondary 2, administrative buildings, and the Vice Principal’s office.

Also destroyed were the school’s e-library—where several computers were damaged—a solar panel, water pump, storage tanks located across the school, and a generator.

A video circulating online showed female students in panic, screaming and running in various directions to escape the destruction caused by the storm.

As a result of the damage, the school management has suspended academic activities until repairs can be carried out.

In a notice shared via the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) platform on Saturday, parents were advised not to bring their children back to school until further instructions are issued.

The PTA statement, signed by its chairman, Dr. J. Etim, reads: “This is to inform all parents that their children/wards who have not returned to the college should not return until further notice. Only students of examination classes (JSS3 and SS3) should return. There has been a rainstorm that has affected all the buildings and facilities in the college. In view of the above, no more resumption tomorrow except for students of JSS3 and SS3. Parents should comply with this directive, please. Treat as a matter of importance.”
