Randy Waldrum Reveals Why Super Falcons Lost to Spain

Super Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum, attributed his team’s defeat against Spain to poor finishing.

The West Africans suffered their second consecutive defeat at the 2024 Olympic Games, losing 1-0 to the world champions on Sunday. Despite being dominated for most of the game, the Super Falcons created enough chances to at least secure a draw.

Waldrum admitted that his team’s failure to capitalize on these opportunities led to their loss.

“We had three to four good opportunities today, but unfortunately, we did not convert them,” the American coach said post-match. “We had one in the first half, a breakaway, and Asisat and Rash (Rasheedat Ajibade) missed those chances. We had chances, but the Spanish took theirs.”

However, Randy Waldrum emphasized that his team has demonstrated they can compete with the best.

“We lost to two of the best teams in the world. Spain is the best team right now, and Brazil is in the top 10,” he added. “We have shown that we could have gotten something out of those matches. It shows we can play against anybody in the world. So, I am proud of the players.”
