Nigerian-born forward Razak Omotoyossi, who represented Benin, passed away today Tuesday at the age of 39 as confirmed by Beninese authorities.

“Omogoal” as fondly called, had been battling depression for months before his death.

Nigerian reporter Shina Oludare made the disclosure.

Meanwhile, in July 2025, a fire destroyed Omotoyossi’s home, and three weeks before he died his sister passed away — events that clearly took a heavy emotional toll.

Oludare wrote on X:

“Razak Omotoyossi’s brother tells me that the former Benin Republic legend had been battling depression and illness, which contributed to his passing… more details shortly… “For context, he tragically lost his home to a fire in July, and just two weeks ago, his sister also.”

Omotoyossi made his name as a quick, hard-working striker who scored important goals for club and country.

He earned 55 caps and scored 21 times for Benin and played across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, including spells at Helsingborg, Metz and Zamalek.

His former Swedish club Helsingborgs IF posted a brief tribute on X:

“Helsingborgs IF is in mourning. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones.”

His former club, Metz FC, also paid tribute on social media, posting a photo with the caption:

“FC Metz has learned with deep emotion of the passing of Razak Omotoyossi, who died at the age of 39. The club wishes to express its most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Other clubs, teammates and fans have also shared condolences online.

For now, photos, clips and messages from supporters provide the clearest picture of the mark Razak Omotoyossi left on football in Benin, Nigeria and beyond.
