Atletico opened the scoring when Robin Le Normand nodded home from a cross in the 14th minute.

But Real Madrid answered quickly: Kylian Mbappé broke clear to score, and then Arda Güler followed with a composed finish to put Real Madrid in front.

Just before half-time, Alexander Sørloth headed Atletico level, setting up a frantic second half.

Soon after the break, Güler’s high boot gave Atletico a penalty, and Álvarez calmly slotted it away.

Álvarez then curled a free-kick around Thibaut Courtois to put Atletico ahead.

Courtois got a touch to a Sorloth effort but could not keep it out, and late on Griezmann slid the ball past him as the crowd erupted.

Diego Simeone had his team press constantly, and Atletico punished the space Real Madrid left on the counter.

Xabi Alonso’s side tried to live off quick counters and pace, but Atletico looked sharper and more direct throughout.

Even with Mbappé causing problems — he now has eight league goals — his side could not stop Atletico’s momentum.

Referees disallowed a Clement Lenglet goal for handball, and Sørloth risked a second yellow with his celebration, yet Atletico kept their cool and grabbed a big win.

The victory lifts Atletico up the table and ends Real Madrid’s early dominance.
