Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has said his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was taken in the overall interest of the state.
Governor Diri made the statement on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day held at the Ecumenical Centre in Igbogene, Yenagoa.

It was the first time the governor spoke publicly about his defection after officially resigning from the PDP on October 15.
The two-term governor said although some people might not immediately understand his decision, time would reveal that his motives were selfless and for the benefit of the people.
He expressed satisfaction over the turnout of political leaders across party lines at the thanksgiving service, describing the show of unity as a positive step toward Bayelsa’s progress.
In a statement signed by the governor, he stressed that politics should be used as a platform for development, not as a weapon to bring others down.

“Somebody had to take the decision (to leave the PDP) and I took it on behalf of the state. I took it in the best interest of the state. Some of you might not understand now but later it will be clear to all,” Diri said.
He added that his administration’s focus on completing inherited projects and initiating new ones was part of the achievements that called for gratitude.
“When we came in as a government, what we did at the beginning was to ensure that most of the uncompleted projects were completed, and we introduced new ones. That alone is enough reason to thank God,” he stated.
Diri further highlighted the peace and stability currently being enjoyed in Bayelsa as another reason for thanksgiving, urging residents to cultivate gratitude and unity for the continued growth of the state.
“The peace and security we are enjoying is another reason to thank God. Politics is for development and not to kill your brother. The gathering here is a testimony of the unity in the state,” the governor said.
