Fresh facts have surfaced on why the Federal Government made a U-turn on its order to public universities to reopen for academic activities.

The order was issued by the National University Commission despite the ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

The circular tagged NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135, was addressed to all vice-chancellors; pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities, ordering them to re-open universities.

However, a heavy rebuttal from opinion leaders and critical stakeholders led to the government withdrawing the order barely hours later.

According to a source, the circular was withdrawn to allow for more negotiations between the government and ASUU.

The source told Vanguard;

“After the circular became public and people started interpreting what the consequences could be, it was agreed that the circular is withdrawn to also allow for more negotiation between the government and the union.”

The withdrawal of the circular dated September 23, was confirmed by the Acting Director of Public Affairs, the National Universities Commission, Mr Ayo Haruna.
