The Niger Delta Restoration Network has urged the Presidency to reconsider the rumoured scrapping of the Niger Delta Ministry.
In a statement on Saturday by its Founder, Comrade Oweikeye Endoro, the group “urged the Presidency to reconsider rumoured scrapping of Niger Delta Ministry for more effective alternatives”.
Oweikeye said, “In response to the growing speculation about the potential scrapping of the Ministry of Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Restoration Network feels compelled to express our profound concerns and advocate for alternative measures that will ensure the sustained development and prosperity of the Niger Delta region.
“While we recognize the need for efficient governance and streamlined administration, we firmly believe that discontinuing the Ministry of Niger Delta affairs should not be an option considered by the Presidency, especially given the prevailing state of underdevelopment and systemic challenges faced by the communities. The Niger Delta region has long been grappling with issues of environmental degradation, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to basic services, and overall neglect.

“We strongly advise that, rather than scrapping the Ministry, the Presidency should explore more proactive measures to address the developmental needs of the Niger Delta communities. This region, rich in natural resources and cultural heritage, has immense potential for economic growth and prosperity. It requires dedicated attention, tailored policies, and well-coordinated efforts to unlock this potential.
“We acknowledge that the Ministry of Niger Delta has faced criticism in the past for not fully meeting its primary objectives of fostering comprehensive development in the region. However, this history of shortfalls should serve as a lesson rather than a justification for abandoning the cause altogether.
“Instead, we propose a thorough evaluation and reform of the Ministry’s operations to ensure it becomes a more effective tool for sustainable growth, development and community empowerment.
“It is essential to acknowledge the concerns raised by the Niger Delta people regarding the Ministry’s performance. Yet, we believe that a revamped and reinvigorated Ministry, with a renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, and community engagement, can better serve the region’s interests.
“We urge the Presidency to consult extensively with the communities and stakeholders of the Niger Delta to understand their specific needs, aspirations, and recommendations for the future development of the region. The voices of those directly affected by this decision must be heard and taken into consideration.
“We call upon the Presidency to view this moment as an opportunity to rectify past shortcomings and to create a more inclusive, responsive, and effective approach to regional development.
“We therefore emphasize that the Presidency should explore alternative avenues that not only address the challenges of the past but also pave the way for a brighter, more prosperous future for the Niger Delta region and its people.”
