The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning to the government, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of its president, Joe Ajaero, who was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday.

“We condemn the arrest and detention of Ajaero in the strongest terms. It’s an attack on all Nigerian workers, NLC’s deputy president. “We demand his immediate and unconditional release before 12 midnight today.”said Adeyanju Adewale

The NLC has placed all its affiliates, state councils, civil society allies, and the Nigerian populace on red alert, mobilizing for further action. “We will not be intimidated or deterred from our duty to protect the rights of workers and the freedom of all Nigerians,” Adewale added.

The labour union is also demanding the immediate reversal of the current hike in petrol price to ₦617 per litre. “This is another attempt to delay the implementation of the new minimum wage,” Adewale said.

In a communique issued after an emergency meeting, the NLC warned the government to stop the dangerous trend of going after dissenting voices. “We will not waver in our duty to protect the rights of workers and the freedom of all Nigerians,” the communique read.

The NLC has summoned an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) for September 10 to discuss the situation and take fresh action.
