Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has claimed that every new Afrobeats artist who has risen to prominence since 2019 is following a template he created. During a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club, Rema stated that his approach to entering the music industry set a new standard, particularly with the release of extended plays (EPs).
“When I came into the game, I brought a new template. The way I came in and dominated was different. I started the EP trend. Since 2019, every new Afrobeats artist has followed that path, dropping an EP as their introduction,” he said.
Rema also noted that many in the industry may be hesitant to give him credit for shaping this trend, which is why he feels the need to speak up for himself.

“A lot of people would argue my contribution to Afrobeats, but I don’t want to be seen as an Afrobeats Messiah. Sometimes people don’t like when young artists applaud themselves. It’s often expected that others, especially the OGs, should say it. But since no one is acknowledging it, I might have to say it myself,” he added.
