Some residents in Bayelsa State on Sunday looted a warehouse in Yenagoa, the state’s capital city.

Daily Report Nigeriareports that the warehouse in question was located along the Isaac Boro Expressway and owned by Senator Konbowei Benson, the senator representing the Central Bayelsa Senatorial District.

Residents expressed anger at domestic difficulties in eliminating subsidies for Premium Motor Spirit, PMS also known as petrol.

The removal of the subsidy pushed up fuel prices from around N190 naira to around N620 naira per liter, which had a negative impact on the prices of goods and services.

Subsequently, the administration of President Bola Tinubu promised to provide mitigating measures to the people of Nigeria to lessen the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies.

Tinubu then announced that 5 billion naira would be provided to each state and the Federal Capital Territory, along with food items to be shared among the people of Nigeria.

It was unclear whether the looted warehouse in Yenagoa contained the food items promised by the Tinubu authorities.

Some reports suggested it was confirmed to contain relief material for victims of the 2022 floods.

Some of the food products have expired, however, that has not stopped locals from looting warehouses.

Also, the state government is yet to comment on the case.
