Reverse Electricity Tariff Hike by May 31 or Face Action – Labour Unions to FG

NLC, TUC Gives Govs Ultimatum on N35k Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have issued a joint ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding an immediate reversal of the recent electricity tariff hike by May 31, 2024.

NLC and TUC’s decision was made at a joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, where the Unions strongly condemned the unilateral tariff increase as unjust, burdensome, and detrimental to the economic well-being of Nigerian workers and citizens.

The NEC vehemently rejected the hike, citing the authorities’ failure to consider the economic hardships faced by the masses and the provisions of the Law.

They reiterated their demands for an immediate reversal of the tariff hike and the abolition of the “apartheid categorization” into Bands, which has caused undue hardship for Nigerian workers and citizens.

The Unions have given the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the federal government until May 31, 2024, to meet these demands, failing which they will take further action to protect the interests of Nigerian workers and citizens.

In a recent protest, the Organized Labour, comprising the NLC, TUC, and their affiliates, shut down NERC offices nationwide in response to the tariff hike.

The NERC had announced a 240 per cent increase in electricity tariffs for Band A customers, from N68/kWh to N225/kWh, effective April 3.

Reports held that the move marked the removal of subsidies for customers in the Band A category, who make up about 15 per cent of the total 12.82 million power consumers in the country.
