Rivers Assembly: Ijaw Youths Throw Weight Behind Victor Oko-Jumbo

Ijaw Youths under aegis of Ijaw Youth Leaders of Thought have thrown their weight behind Victor Oko-Jumbo as the legitimate Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The group also echoed support for all lawmakers that are constitutionally empowered to discharge their legislative functions as duly elected members in their various constituencies.

According to chairman of the group, Comrade Agbor Jackson, “the emergence of Rt Hon.Oko-Jumbo is timely and constitutional with other lawmakers as the majority of the Rivers State House of Assembly in accordance to the newly amended Electoral Act, which empowers the (PDP) lawmakers as the legitimate legislators in the eyes of the law.

Agbor said the group “pledges unwavering support to the newly elected speaker and other lawmakers”, charging them ‘not to be distracted in the hands of mischief makers and focus on the legislative works and support the Governor Siminalayi Fubara to provide good governance in the state in the entirety of his reign.”

“We have overlooked the oppressive measures coming from the camp of some selfish political actors who see themselves as dictators and want to govern Rivers State from Abuja and cause political unrest by inciting the former lawmakers who defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The group said such persons “lack the constitutional backing to operates as lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly.”

Recall that Oko-Jumbo was elected Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly after Martins Amaewhule was kicked out by lawmakers under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Amaewhule and other lawmakers who decamped to the APC had their seats declared vacant following their defection.
