A fresh oil spill occurred in Ikata community, Ahoada-East local government area of Rivers State, barely two weeks after another spill was reported in Ogale community.

The spill is suspected to be caused by third-party interference, with vandals allegedly excavating the ground and vandalizing a 14-inch pipe along the Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline right of way.
A new oil spill has occurred in Ikata community, Ahoada-East local government area of Rivers State, Nigeria.
The spill happened on a 14-inch pipeline right of way operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Ltd, which recently acquired Shell Petroleum Development Company’s assets in a $2.4 billion divestment deal.
The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) confirmed the spill, stating that it was reported by members of its One Million Youth Volunteers Network and Crude Oil Spill Alert System.

According to YEAC-Nigeria’s Executive Director, Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, the spill point is “seriously spilling crude oil into the environment and destroying the ecosystem in the surrounding area”.

The group suspects third-party interference, alleging that vandals excavated the ground and vandalized the pipe, leading to the spill.
YEAC-Nigeria has called on NOSDRA to conduct a joint investigative visit to determine the cause and hold perpetrators accountable under the Petroleum Industry Act 2021.
