The caretaker committee chairman of Omuma Local Government Area in Rivers State, Promise Reginald, has dismissed the call for arrest by lawmakers loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike, describing them as illegitimate and incapable of issuing orders.

Reginald described the pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Martin Amaewhule, as illegitimate and incapable of issuing orders, stating that they have lost their legislative seats following their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress.
Reginald said, “To be honest with you, if a serving lawmaker in Rivers State or the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo, was the one saying these things, we can take him seriously. Martin Amaewhule ceased to be a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”
He emphasized that the lawmakers have no constitutional powers to call for the arrest of anyone in Rivers State, adding that they are “busy parading themselves, telling the populace that the police belong to them, that they give orders and the police obey them.”

Reginald stressed that the Supreme Court’s verdict on local government autonomy did not ask the governor to dissolve the caretaker committees, and that the committees are recognized by law.
He noted that over 22 states are being run by caretaker members, and questioned why Rivers State should be an exception.
