  • Man United fans can’t print Ronaldo, Beckham, or Cantona on jerseys due to trademark issues.

  • Real Madrid faces the same problem with Ronaldo.

  • Fans that are frustrated as a result may resort to unofficial means.

Fans of Manchester United are no longer permitted to print the famous names of Eric Cantona, David Beckham, or Cristiano Ronaldo on their jerseys.

This surprising legal snag comes amid a booming retro shirt revival, yet even a vintage-style United kit can’t feature these icons.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid enter the same problem with the Ronaldo name, showing how perplexing licensing can really be.

The hardcore fans see these names as the very core of United’s identity, so to them the zoning out of these names from customization seems like an injustice to history.

Many might try and get these names through unofficial channels, risking inferior quality or even legal ramifications, just to get the pride of having their heroes’ names on something.

At the moment, the United faithful have to either choose current stars or unknown or less famous legends to help personalize their favourite jersey.

Whether the club will secure these trademarks remains uncertain, but supporters will be watching closely.

What’s your take on this trademark dilemma? Should Manchester United and Real Madrid move quickly to reclaim their legends’ names?
