The game started off with high energy, but Germany found the breakthrough first.
Only three minutes into the second half, Florian Wirtz jumped up to meet a perfect cross from Joshua Kimmich, heading the ball past Portugal’s back line, thereby handing the hosts a 1–0 lead.
Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martinez, wasted no time as he brought on three substitutes that completely changed the flow of the match.
Few minutes later, Francisco Conceição showed why he was brought on as the young winger sliced through Germany’s defense.
He curled a beautiful shot into the bottom corner, leaving goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen with zero chance.
That equalizer gave the Portuguese team and their traveling fans a real boost of energy.
While Portugal were pushing hard for a winner, it was Cristiano Ronaldo who delivered when it mattered most.
He timed his run perfectly and tapped the ball in to make it 2-1 from Nuno Mendes’ low cross in the 75th minute.
The strike was Ronaldo’s 137th goal for Portugal and his seventh in this Nations League – a run establishing a new single-tournament record.
Before this, Romelu Lukaku and Ferran Torres shared the top spot with six goals each during the 2021/22 season.
