Harry Maguire pulled one back in the 89th minute to force penalties, but United still crashed out after a sloppy and disjointed display.
Amorim, under pressure since taking charge last season, admitted the problems run far deeper than individual mistakes.
“The players spoke really loud today about what they want,” – he said, pointing to poor attitude and urgency.
The former Sporting boss added that his team “were not even here” at the start and apologised directly to supporters.
He refused to blame goalkeeper André Onana, who conceded at his near post for the opener and failed to collect a cross that led to Tyrell Warren’s tap-in.
Instead, Amorim shifted the focus to wider issues.
“It’s not about Andre. With all due respect, this is a fourth-division team. It’s not the goalkeeper. It’s more than that.” – he confessed.
