A video trending online shows sacks of damaged naira notes reportedly discovered around Wadata Police Barracks in Benue State.
The Naira notes were hidden in multiple bags.
The rotten notes were suspected to have been stacked for years due to their appearance.
A voice in the video said:
“Live oh, Wadata, EFCC discover money. See money. See where dem hide am. Money don spoil, make una see am. See money. Police Barracks, Wadata. Politicians, una no go kill us.”
The Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Makurdi office, however, debunked the report.
An official of the commission( name withheld) who spoke with newsmen said that the office got information about sacks of old naira notes and deployed its men to the scene.
However, the men discovered that it was condemned notes from the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The official told newsmen:
“It is true we heard information of old naira notes. Then we went to court to obtain a search warrant, on getting there we found those condemned naira notes.
“The owner of the old naira notes said he bought them from the Central Bank of Nigeria, the old notes have been cut into pieces and squeezed, it is not money at all.
“I will send the pictures of the contents in the sacks that were discovered to you to see.”
