- SDP Chairman says Trump’s genocide against Christians claim in Nigeria is false and dangerous.
- Gabam insists insecurity is a governance issue, not a genocide against Christians or religious war.
- He urges Tinubu to counter Trump’s remarks through diplomacy and verifiable facts.
- Gabam says foreign interference could worsen tensions.
Shehu Musa Gabam, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has strongly refuted Donald Trump’s recent allegation that Nigeria is carrying out a genocide against Christians. Gabam described the statement as irresponsible and an attempt to twist Nigeria’s security crisis into a religious narrative.
According to Gabam, insecurity in Nigeria affects every community regardless of religion, and portraying it as a targeted genocide against Christians is unfair and dangerous. He stressed that both Muslims and Christians have suffered killings across different regions, particularly in the North-East and North-West, where thousands of Muslim victims have also been recorded.

“There is no religious genocide in Nigeria. Nigerians are dying from both sides. The tragedy is not sectional,” he stated.
Gabam criticised Trump’s influence on the U.S. government’s decision to place Nigeria on the list of Countries of Particular Concern, saying such actions distort reality and paint the nation as a religious war zone. He argued that what Nigeria is facing is a failure of governance, not a deliberate campaign against any faith group.
He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to address Trump’s comments with strategic diplomacy and to ensure that capable diplomats are appointed to defend the nation’s interests at global forums. Gabam also reminded Nigerians that this is not Trump’s first inflammatory remark about the country, recalling the previous visa restrictions and derogatory comments made during his administration.
According to him, foreign powers should not be allowed to use Nigeria’s internal problems as political tools.

“Our security challenges are real, but the solutions must come from within,” he warned, cautioning that external military pressure or interference may worsen the situation.
Gabam called for reforms across security agencies, emphasising professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights, to rebuild public trust and ensure national stability.
“Ultimately, Nigeria must fix Nigeria,” he concluded
