Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state was barred from entering the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, Base Makurdi on Saturday morning to receive Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was transiting through the NAF Airport by helicopter to Wukari in Taraba state.

The Governor, who had previously received a letter of notification from the State House Abuja on February 10, 2022, signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs/Head of Protocol Office of the Vice President, Ambassador Abdullahi Gwary, informing him of the visit, was denied access into the NAF facility to receive the Vice President.

In a press conference, the Governor, who described the incident as unfortunate and a breach of protocol, said, “I feel so sad for our country Nigeria, where everything has been reduced to politics.” Certain issues should not be politicized.

“I was scheduled to attend the burial ceremony of one of our elders and leaders, Prof Ignitius Ayua; I had made all arrangements to travel to Konshisha Local Government Area, LGA, when this letter (waving the letter) was brought to me, indicating that the Vice President is transiting through Makurdi to Wukari.”

“It is customary for the Governor to receive distinguished dignitaries such as the President or Vice President when they pass through your state.”

“I decided to appoint the Deputy Governor to represent me at Prof. Ayua’s funeral.”

So I got ready this morning and went to the Air Force Base where the Vice-President was supposed to land en route to Wukari. Unfortunately, I was turned away at the gate; I was in my own state.

“It doesn’t happen, it’s a violation of protocol, and it’s not acceptable; it’s politics taken too far; it’s not right, and someone has to account for it.”

“If a prominent figure, such as the Vice President, comes to my state and I am unable to greet him, it will be a breach of protocol on my part.”

How can I get to the NAF base if I am denied entry at the gate, it has never occurred in this country.

“Perhaps the same Presidency that wrote to me is unaware.”

But, if we are to make progress, I believe we must distinguish between politics and government activities.

It is government activity that I welcome Mr. President or Vice-President; it is government activity that I welcome any dignitary from the Federal Government who comes here.”

“This is the letter that was written to me, you can see the content,” the Governor said, holding up the letter.

I don’t want to be a busybody; I have a lot on my plate.

“As I speak, the entire Gwer-West is under siege.” The Fulanis have been burning down houses, and I was supposed to go there as well, but I had to change my plans to meet with the Vice President I’m so saddened by how far politics has deviated from its intended purpose.

“In politics, there is no such thing as a permanent enemy or permanent friend.” If they choose to do the right thing, I can be the President’s best friend tomorrow.

I have no issue with the President or Vice President, and everything I say is intended to add value to our development and get things right.

“I have never insulted the President, Vice President, or the Federal Government, but there are some things they are doing that are incorrect and should be corrected.”

“You will recall the issue of Executive Order 10; where does the President have the authority to issue decrees in a democratic setting?”

Perhaps he still believes he would issue decrees because he was once a military ruler. He does not have the authority.

“How can the President usurp the National Assembly’s powers?” These are the things I criticize, and they are constructive.

And, thank God, I am vindicated today because the Supreme Court ruled that the President lacks the authority to issue decrees.

He is no longer a military President; he was elected democratically by the people.

“So, if he wants something, he should go through the National Assembly, just like I do when I want something, it have to send it to state House of Assembly for approval.”

“It is very unfortunate that this presidency is barefooted, it is a lame duck,” the Governor continued.

That is why we have all of these insecurity issues in our country today.

That is why the country’s economy is deteriorating.

“How can you bar a governor in your own state?” What exactly does that mean? I’m in a lot of pain, and I’m going to tell the Vice President about it. Okay, if they want to do something, that’s fine.

And if they don’t, that’s fine.

“But that’s what we keep talking about; they want us to stay a banana republic.” Isn’t there a constitution?

Can’t you tell the difference between politics and other things? Is it possible that I insulted the President?

Is it possible that I insulted the Vice President? All I’m saying is that the right thing should be done. Allow for justice, equity, and fairness. It is regrettable.

“I will report this violation to the Vice President because it was protocol for me to go to receive him, then see him off, and then receive him when he returns.”

“It’s truly unfortunate. I’m deeply sorry. And those who remain silent, I tell them, will not be where they are one day.

We must all stand together and condemn the evil that is taking place in our country. This is not acceptable.”
