Senate Cancels Planned Purchase of $6m Presidential Yacht | Daily Report Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate has canceled a proposal to purchase a presidential yacht worth $6 million.

The government had planned to buy a $6 million yacht for President Bola Tinubu, but Senate rejected the proposal.

The decision was met with widespread approval from Nigerians, who criticized the plan as a waste of money.

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has also urged Tinubu to cancel the purchase of a N5 billion presidential yacht.

Sani has been vocal in his opposition to the purchase, calling it a “dynasty of thieves.”

It was said that the accessories and other components of the yacht which were among the committed obligations submitted by the office of the Chief of Naval Staff to the Ministry of Defence, had already been delivered to Nigeria.

However, it had not been fully paid after Former President Muhammadu Buhari approved its purchase.

Tinubu approved about N62 billion out of the total N200 billion request submitted by the naval.

On Thursday, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Gbenga Daniel held a meeting with the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.

Daniel then re-evaluated the budget of the navy in the supplementary proposal by the President.

After the reevaluation, he advised that the proposed purchase of the presidential yacht be cancelled and the proposal replaced.

He appealed that the halted presidential yacht proposal be replaced with critical equipment to support operational efforts against oil theft, bunkering, and pipeline vandalisation.

The Senate Naval Charman, thereafter, passed the revised supplementary budget.
