The Nigerian Senate has strongly denied rumours of a plan to remove Senate President Godswill Akpabio, stating that such claims are false and politically motivated.
Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, the Senate Leader clarified that there was no discussion, meeting, or plan to impeach Akpabio. He emphasized that the story circulating on social media was a deliberate attempt to create confusion and distract lawmakers from their legislative duties.

He further explained that statements credited to Senator Orji Uzor Kalu had been taken out of context. “From my discussions with Senator Kalu, it was clear that the remarks attributed to him were misrepresented,” he said.
The Senate Leader noted that the upper chamber remains united and that senators are standing firmly behind Akpabio’s leadership. “There is no tension in the Senate. We are committed to delivering results for Nigerians and will not allow rumours to derail our focus,” he added.
During the plenary session, senators officially reaffirmed their confidence in Akpabio and described the Senate as one family working for the progress of the nation. The statement was seen as a firm rejection of efforts to create division within the legislature.
Meanwhile, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who represents Abia North, had earlier clarified that there was indeed an attempt to impeach Akpabio but that the move was stopped before it could progress. He described the issue as a “family misunderstanding” that had since been resolved.
“There were attempts, but we didn’t allow that to happen. We are one family, and it’s not going to happen,” Kalu said while speaking to newsmen on Tuesday.

Kalu also addressed other national issues, including the economy, saying that while the country is facing hardship, the macroeconomic outlook is improving. “As a businessman, I feel the pain too. The macro economy is doing well, but the micro economy is struggling. What we need now is to ensure growth trickles down to ordinary Nigerians,” he said.
On the political front, Kalu described Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo as a progressive leader and hinted that he could soon join the All Progressives Congress (APC). “I don’t see anything wrong with him joining us. It’s confirmed that he will join the APC because he is a progressive like President Tinubu and Senate President Akpabio,” he said.
The senator also expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, stating that the president currently has no strong opposition and is on track for a second term.
