Senate Passes North Central Development Commission Bill, Awaits Presidential Assent

The Senate passed a bill seeking the establishment of the North Central Development Commission on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Abba Moro, representing Benue South Senatorial District, and co-sponsored by other senators from the North Central region.

The bill had previously passed first and second readings on October 5, 2023, and February 21, 2024, respectively.

It was initially sponsored in the 9th Senate by Moro but failed to receive presidential assent before the Senate’s expiration.

According to Moro, the Commission will focus on resettlement, rehabilitation, integration, and reconstruction of roads, houses, and business premises of victims of flood and farmers/herders clashes, as well as tackling poverty, illiteracy, and environmental challenges in North Central Nigeria.

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu would assent to the bill, stating, “I congratulate Senator Abba Moro and all those who contributed to the success of this bill.

I am optimistic that President Bola Tinubu will assent to this bill for the overall development of North Central Nigeria” .
