The Nigerian Senate rejected two bills on Tuesday that sought to empower and recognize women.
One of the bills seeks to create one special seat for a woman in the Senate, House of Representatives, and Federal Capital Territory, with no regard for eligibility to run.
The bill was defeated by senators who voted on it when it was debated.

“The bill seeks to create a special seat for women in the Senate, House of Representatives, State Houses of Assembly, and the Federal Capital Territory reserved solely for women, without prejudice to their eligibility to contest the existing Senatorial seats in each State and FCT,” it stated.
Senators also voted against the proposed 35% affirmative action for women in political party administration.
It was previously reported that the Vice President’s wife, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, and her entourage were in the Chamber as observers of Tuesday’s legislative proceedings, which saw Senators reject two bills pertaining to the female gender.
