The Senate is expected to pass President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills today, after a delay to allow for adequate review and discussion.

The four bills, Nigerian Tax Bill, Tax Administration Bill, Revenue Tax Board Bill, and Nigerian Revenue Service Establishment Bill, were forwarded by the President six months ago as part of efforts to reform the country’s fiscal policies and boost revenue generation.

In a related development, the Senate has resolved to hold a two-day national security summit to address the rising wave of killings and insecurity in the country. The decision followed a motion sponsored by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who emphasized the need for alternative language in military engagement and enhanced funding to advance professional practices in security.

“We wonder how a single factor can be responsible for the projected massive decline in the size of an economy, moreso, when Nigeria is moving away from its dependency on crude oil earnings,” is not related to the summit but a statement made in relation to the tax bill. Senator Mohammed Dandutse seconded the motion, citing the lack of intelligence sharing among security agencies as a major setback.

“Nigeria is blessed, we have no other country except Nigeria. We have to face these criminals squarely. No country succeeds except with peace and security,” he stated.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, put the motion to a voice vote, and the majority of senators voted in favor of the summit. The summit will include delegates from all levels of government and traditional institutions to develop far-reaching solutions to the security challenges.
