Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, has expressed concern over the sharp decline in the number of senators elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to her, the opposition party has lost 31 senators in the Senate due to a prolonged internal crisis that triggered several defections.

Akpoti-Uduaghan spoke in Abuja during the inauguration of the PDP Convention Committee, an event seen by party leaders as a key step toward rebuilding unity ahead of future elections.
She revealed that when she joined the Senate in November 2023, the PDP had 37 senators, but the number has now dropped significantly.
“When I joined, it was late November 2023. We were 37 PDP senators. But today we’re only six,” she said.
She explained that the constant defections created uncertainty within the party, noting that during Senate sittings it often felt like colleagues could leave the party at any time.
The senator said many lawmakers who left the party cited leadership disputes within the PDP as the reason for their departure.
However, she believes the issues are now being addressed and urged those who left to reconsider their decision.
“Trust me, it’s not greener on the other side. You are all welcome back to the PDP,” she said.
Also speaking at the event, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who was inaugurated as Chairman of the PDP 2026 National Convention Committee, described the moment as critical for the party’s future.
According to him, the convention is more than a routine gathering and represents a turning point for rebuilding the party.
He acknowledged that the PDP had gone through a difficult period marked by internal disagreements and legal battles that reached the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal.
Ikpeazu said the recent affirmation of the party’s National Caretaker Working Committee by the Court of Appeal provides a chance for the party to rebuild and restore confidence.
He stressed that reconciliation among members is necessary for the PDP to move forward.
“What the PDP needs now is honest reconciliation, rooted in truth, driven by sincerity and sustained by mutual respect,” he said.
The convention committee has been tasked with organizing a transparent and credible national convention that will produce a new National Working Committee.
Party leaders believe this process will help reposition the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
