Senator Ali Ndume, former Senate Chief Whip from Borno South, has proposed that Nigeria adopt a part-time legislative system for federal lawmakers, arguing it could save the country billions of naira annually.

Speaking on Channels Television, Ndume said the financial burden of maintaining a full-time National Assembly is unsustainable amid rising insecurity, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and North-Central, kidnappings, and violent crimes.

He noted that large police escorts still accompany senators and VIPs despite President Bola Tinubu’s directive to redeploy officers to frontline security duties. Ndume urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to ensure full compliance with the presidential order.

According to the senator, redirecting funds and police manpower from VIP protection to critical security needs would strengthen national security, improve operational efficiency, and support Nigeria’s economic recovery and investor confidence.

Ndume emphasized that reforming governance costs and security priorities is essential to allow government to invest in personnel welfare, logistics, and equipment for the nation’s security forces.
