A traffic police man, Sergeant Haruna Yusuf, serving at the Kwara State Command was recently paraded for stealing a gun assigned to his colleague.

Sgt Yusuf in an interview gave reasons as to why he allegedly stole the pistol belonging to his colleague, the late Inspector Ehigimetor Ileso, causing him to be dismissed from the police.

According to him, he saw the said gun behind a mosque in his division in Omu-Aran town.

“I found it behind a mosque in my division in Omu-Aran town. I decided not to tell my colleagues about it. I didn’t know what came over me. I eventually sold the firearm. I can’t explain what came over me at that time. sold it to a DJ (Disc Jockey). I sold the gun for N47,000. The man is into the business of firearms.”

Sgt Yusuf also added that he sold the gun not knowing that it belonged to his colleague and was too scared to say the truth when he found out the gun was assigned to the late inspector.

“I didn’t steal the gun. I found it on the ground as I said earlier. It was later that I found out that the person that the gun was assigned to was in my division. I knew when they started looking for the gun but I was afraid to say that I found the gun. I felt that if I confessed then, it would create a problem for me. The person I sold the gun to would also be in problem. I was scared and that was why I decided not to say anything”.

When asked how he knew the DJ was into the business of fire arms, Sgt Yusuf said he had earlier sold a locally made revolver pistol to the DJ.

“I sold that gun and one locally-made revolver pistol. I sold that one too. I attended the burial of someone from my tribe and at the ceremony, I met someone that told us that if we were interested we could get the revolver. The man said if I was interested, I could have it. I bought it from him. I looked into the offer, and with the insecurity in the country occasioned by killer herdsmen, I thought I needed personal protection. I signified intention to have the gun. I met the person that sold it to me at the burial. So I paid for the gun. I bought it for N25,000”.
