“A heartfelt thank you to everyone and to football for everything. You will always be a part of this beautiful story.”

Calm and composed, Busquests changed how teams approach the defensive midfield role.

He read the game ahead of others, moved the ball quickly, and set the tempo.

At Barcelona he won nine La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns.

He then carried that winning habit into Spain’s national team, where he helped lift the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship and earned 143 caps.

After the 2022 World Cup, Busquets stepped away from international duty and then moved to the United States in 2023.

He joined Inter Miami to reunite with Lionel Messi and to give MLS a proven winner.

Since joining, Sergio Busquets has led by example, sharing calm leadership and sharp tactical sense with younger teammates.

Reaction poured in quickly. Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso praised him, saying:

“He wasn’t the fastest but he was the quickest mentally, always a step ahead so he could make the right decisions. That’s why he had such a brilliant career and we all speak very fondly of Busi.” – Alonso added.

Whether Sergio Busquets moves into coaching, media, a quieter life, his influence on the holding midfield role will last.

Young players already study his positioning and passing as a model for the modern game.
