Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti stated that he’s the only musician in Nigeria who refuses to accept currency notes when performing live.

He also said that many musicians, particularly those in the Fuji genre, use melodic praise to encourage audience members to spray them with cash during their performances.

Kuti’s remarks came amid the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) recent clampdown on individuals abusing the Naira by spraying and trampling on it.

In a video message posted to his Instagram account, he explained:

“I don’t even like to be sprayed. I’m the only artist that stops people from spraying me. Even my dad, the legendary Fela didn’t prevent people from spraying him but he demanded the denominations he wanted to be sprayed.

“Nobody wey Sunny Ade never sing for so he can be sprayed. Everybody name. KWAM 1 … eh eh. It is the politicians that made spraying a standard behaviour.”
