Seun Kuti Claims His Band ‘Egypt 80’ is Africa’s Most Successful

Grammy-nominated Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has made a bold claim about the Egypt 80 band, which he inherited from his late father and Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

In a recent interview with City 105.1 FM, Seun Kuti asserted that Egypt 80 is Africa’s most successful band, proudly highlighting his significant role as the frontman. He expressed his fearless attitude towards sharing his opinions, despite feeling overlooked by the media and African award organizers.

“I won’t stop speaking my mind because I’m no longer afraid of anything you’re going to do. What are you going to do? Not play my videos? You’re already doing this. Even when I got nominated for the Grammys, no award organization in Africa nominated my band in any category,” Kuti said.

“Regardless of what anyone says about me, I, Seun Kuti, am the frontman for Africa’s most successful band. We have 54 albums, and with my next release, it will be 55. The band I lead is an African musical institution. If we knew what we were doing in Africa, this band would be given national recognition to keep it at the forefront of the African psyche worldwide. But well, that is for an African who knows what he’s doing.”
