Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has criticised opposition parties, accusing them of thriving on “lies and hypocrisy” as political activities ahead of future elections intensify.

Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at an interfaith Ramadan and Lent breaking of fast at the State House, Shettima specifically targeted the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleging that its membership registration portal was overwhelmed by fake identities.

According to the vice president, the same opposition figures advocating for electronic transmission of election results failed to ensure credibility in their own party registration process.

He claimed that when ADC opened its membership portal, it was flooded with fictitious names.

Taking a broader swipe at opposition politics, Shettima said misinformation had become their main strategy.

Quoting British wartime leader Winston Churchill, he argued that truth is often surrounded by a “bodyguard of lies,” which he claimed reflects the tactics of government critics.

Addressing political and religious leaders at the event, Shettima urged members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain united as the political season approaches.

He added that the ruling party is now in a stronger political position than it was during the 2023 general elections.

The vice president also dismissed claims that governors defecting to the APC were being pressured, insisting that those joining the party were doing so voluntarily after becoming convinced of the administration’s direction.
