The Anambra State Government has begun deducting salaries of civil servants who failed to report for duty on Mondays in compliance with the sit-at-home order enforced by separatist groups in the South-East.

The government had earlier announced a pro-rata payment system, warning that workers who stayed away from work on Mondays would face salary cuts.

Several civil servants on Tuesday expressed shock over significant deductions from their February wages. At the Jerome Udoji State Secretariat in Awka, workers said the amounts removed did not correspond with the number of Mondays missed.

One staff member of the Ministry of Information, who spoke anonymously, said he received only N3,500 out of his over N80,000 salary, while another colleague reportedly got just N100 after deductions.

Confirming the development, the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, said the cuts were deliberate sanctions for absenteeism.

He explained that workers were required to clock in and out on Mondays as proof of attendance, stressing that failure to do so would be treated as absence.

The move marks a firm stance by the Anambra State Government against continued compliance with the sit-at-home directive.
