A yet-to-be-identified soldier was on Wednesday killed by policemen in Lagos state.

It was gathered that the incident happened in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.

“The soldier was killed at Odogunyan by policemen, he was in mufti. Immediately they realised he was an officer, they ran away to Ogijo police station.

“The soldiers mobilised to the station and burnt a danfo (bus) belonging to the police.

“There is chaos along Lagos/Sagamu Road. People are rushing home, shops closed,” the source told newsmen.

Meanwhile, Men of the Nigerian Army on Wednesday attacked Ogijo Police Station in Ogun State, setting it on fire.
According to a police source, the soldiers, from 174 Battalion Odugunyan in Ikorodu, Lagos State, were on a reprisal.

The soldiers were alleged to have mobilised and attacked the station after one of their colleague was stabbed to death by a mobile police officer.

The police source said:

“Our station is under heavy assault by men of the Nigerian Army from 174 Battalion, Odogunyan.

“They have set the station on fire due to an earlier quarrel between a mobile policeman and a soldier.

“In fact, earlier today, a soldier and the mobile policeman engaged themselves in a physical combat, leading to the mobile policeman overpowering the soldier with a lethal punch.”

“The Ikorodu/Ishagamu Road is now a no go area,” added the police source.

It was however unclear as at press time if police personnel were injured and killed during the attack on the station.

Reacting to the development, the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said contrary to some reports, the affected station was not in Lagos State but Ogun State.

Hundeyin, in the reaction on his Twitter handle, tweeted: “There are stories making the rounds that riots have broken out in Odonguyan, Ikorodu.

“We wish to clarify that the unrest is at Ogijo, Ogun State, though very close to Ikorodu, Lagos.

“Our officers are on the alert and would not allow any breakdown of law and order within Lagos State.”

The Ogun State Police Command was yet to react to the incident as at press time.
