A major security controversy has erupted in Benue State following allegations that soldiers opened fire on the Commander of Operation Zenda, CSP Lyam Akegh, and his patrol team while they were on official duty in Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, during what authorities described as a routine patrol in the troubled community, which has recently witnessed a surge in criminal activities.

According to an official public statement, CSP Akegh was allegedly attacked by soldiers stationed in the area, an action described as both dangerous and unacceptable. The statement noted that the commander, who has been widely credited for his “relentless efforts in combating crime and restoring peace,” had just concluded a patrol when the soldiers allegedly opened fire.
“After successfully completing his patrol operations in Naka, the CSP and his team were allegedly ambushed by soldiers who opened fire sporadically on his official vehicle for reasons yet to be ascertained,” the statement said.
The incident, according to security observers, represents a disturbing case of inter-agency hostility that threatens ongoing operations in a state battling banditry, communal violence, and kidnapping.

The statement condemned the attack as “highly unacceptable” and called for an immediate and thorough investigation by the Nigerian Army to unravel the circumstances and ensure that those responsible are punished.
Security watchers warned that such actions undermine joint operations intended to stabilise the state. “Acts of indiscipline and inter-agency hostility not only endanger lives but also weaken the collective effort to secure our communities,” the statement added.
An eyewitness expressed worry over the safety of CSP Akegh, stating, “I pray for the continued protection of CSP Akegh, whose unwavering dedication has ensured that citizens of Benue State sleep with their two eyes closed.”
The Army is yet to issue an official response as pressure mounts for accountability and clearer coordination among security agencies in the state.
