Former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has strongly criticised the Nigeria Police Force over the assault on women and children who staged a peaceful protest at the Kwara State Government House.

The protesters had gathered to draw attention to the worsening wave of kidnappings and insecurity in their community, but their demonstration reportedly turned violent after suspected hired thugs attacked them.

Videos circulating online show the women being chased, beaten and whipped while uniformed police officers were present at the scene.

The footage suggests that the officers neither intervened nor attempted to shield the protesters from the assault.

Reacting on Monday via his official X account, Sowore described the incident as one of the most shameful displays to have occurred within a government facility.

He expressed outrage that law enforcement officers allegedly stood by as unarmed women were harassed and humiliated in broad daylight.

Sowore also accused Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, of intolerance, alleging that the attack was either authorised or quietly condoned by state authorities.

According to him, violence against women and children under any circumstance has no place in a democratic society.

In the viral video, the women, speaking in Yoruba, appealed emotionally to the government and the public, lamenting repeated kidnappings in their area.

They said residents, including children and husbands, were regularly abducted despite their poor living conditions.

“They have taken everyone from us. We are begging for help. There is nothing left to give these kidnappers,” one of the women cried in the footage.

Sowore called on the Nigeria Police Force to immediately identify and discipline officers who allegedly failed in their duty to protect the protesters.

He further demanded the arrest and prosecution of the thugs involved, warning that failure to act decisively would reinforce suspicions of official complicity.

As of the time of this report, neither the Kwara State Government nor the police had issued an official statement on the incident.
