Spain Tops Group C with Comeback Win Over Japan

Spain

Spain secured the top spot in Group C of the Olympic women’s football tournament with a 2-1 victory over Japan in Nantes on Thursday.

Spain came from behind after Japan took an early lead. This match followed Nigeria’s Super Falcons’ 1-0 loss to Brazil earlier in the day.

Spain’s playmaker, Aitana Bonmati, scored one goal and set up another, helping the world champions to victory. Olympic debutants Spain avenged a 4-0 loss to Japan from last year’s World Cup, which they went on to win.

Japan opened the scoring in the 13th minute with a superb free kick from Aoba Fujino. Bonmati equalized for Spain nine minutes later. Spain dominated possession in the second half and took the lead in the 74th minute with a fine strike from Mariona Caldentey.

The victory places Spain at the top of Group C with three points, tied with second-placed Brazil. Japan and Nigeria are both without points, with Japan ahead on goal difference.

Japan will face Brazil in their next match on Sunday, while Nigeria will take on Spain.
