Nigerian musician and entertainer, Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, has filed a ₦3 billion lawsuit against the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) following the agency’s decision to declare him wanted.

The lawsuit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1354/2025, was submitted on July 9, 2025, at the Federal High Court in Abuja by a group of female lawyers representing the singer. In the suit, Speed Darlington is demanding ₦3 billion in damages, describing the agency’s action as unlawful, defamatory, and harmful to his reputation.

The controversy began when NAPTIP published a “Wanted by NAPTIP” notice on June 27, 2025, featuring Darlington’s name and photograph. The publication was widely circulated across print and digital media in Nigeria.

According to the musician, the move was unwarranted and has put his safety at risk.

“The public declaration was completely baseless and has caused irreparable harm to my reputation and safety,” he argued in the court filing.

He is also seeking a perpetual injunction to stop NAPTIP, its officers, or any affiliated law enforcement agencies from taking further action based on the contents of the notice.

Background to the Case

NAPTIP declared Speed Darlington wanted following allegations of sexual involvement with a minor. The agency said it had placed him on an international watchlist and had informed the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) after he allegedly ignored repeated summonses related to a viral online confession.

Speaking to SaharaReporters, NAPTIP’s Chief Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye, confirmed the agency’s actions, stating:

“We have placed all of them on procedural notice so that wherever they see him, they can take action, because we have already given him enough opportunities.

We are working to limit his access to people, wherever he may be hiding, because he is alleged to be a dangerous individual. He has openly admitted to raping a 14-year-old girl, and as recently as yesterday, he confessed to raping a 15-year-old.

We call on any country where he is hiding to place him under surveillance, arrest him, and hand him over to the appropriate authorities. He is alleged to be an extremely dangerous man who must be removed from society.”

In response, Speed Darlington has publicly denied the allegations. In a video shared on his TikTok page, he insisted he committed no crime and vowed not to respond to the agency’s summons.

“I’m not coming. You hear me? I’m not coming. I have not committed any crime. All I did was speak,” he said.

The case is expected to test the boundaries between freedom of expression, law enforcement authority, and due process as the court prepares to hear arguments from both sides.
