Thirty-five states in Nigeria have allocated a total of N214 billion for local security outfits, defense initiatives, and arms procurement in their 2025 budgets.
According to a report by The PUNCH, the allocations are aimed at bolstering security nationwide.
However, despite the significant funding, insecurity persists, with at least 367 individuals killed during festive periods between 2019 and 2025.
President Bola Tinubu has emphasised the need for effective security measures, stating that local governments are the frontline defenders against insecurity.

He noted, “Sadly, the state of our local government system in Nigeria is a cause of concern, as its degradation and incapacitation have continued significantly and have contributed significantly to our developmental setback and our inability to effectively address the prevailing national security threat.”
The report highlights the various security challenges faced by different states, including attacks on Christian and Muslim communities, kidnapping, and armed robbery.
It also notes that the Nigeria Security Tracker, a project of the Council on Foreign Relations, has recorded numerous incidents of violence and insecurity across the country.
FG, States, LGs Share ₦1.678trn February Revenue as FAAC Meets
The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) has shared a total sum of ₦1.678 trillion, representing the February 2025 Federation Account Revenue, to the Federal, State, and Local Governments.
The revenue was distributed at the March 2025 FAAC meeting held in Abuja, which was chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun.
